Dance – After the painting Dance by Henri Matisse You’re invited to join the whirling red circle to forget the chore of clothes and ground. You’re invited to soar above the hills, beyond the sun in the sky. You’ll learn the moves when you grasp hands with those next to you. You’re invited to join all that has been given to you, despite the leaky brown kernels that pour from your leg, chest, and brow. You’re invited to the core of the earth with its magma, rock, and inferno. You’re invited to join the whirling red circle, to resurrect who you are, little one in blue, little one all alone in your bedroom. Cat Dixon is the author of What Happens in Nebraska (Stephen F. Austin University Press, 2022) and Dispatches from the Unfillable Sinkhole (Alien Buddha Press, 2023) along with two other full length collections and three chapbooks. Recent poems published in Ivo Review, Plainsongs Poetry Journal, and Villain Era. She is a poetry editor with The Good Life Review. She works full-time at a funeral home and teaches creative writing part-time at the University of Nebraska, Omaha.
