To My Long Lost Brother

I used to blame it on the drugs.
now I realize
it was always you.
they only woke
what was already inside of you,
gave life to
the demons that reside in you.
that's how I learned
I could no longer confide in you
and finally,
why I had to say goodbye to you.

The Displaced Wasp
after Mary Oliver

I ask the displaced wasp
with the orange band around her waist,
spiral-dancing in the wind,
rest-waiting on the pavement
only for a moment
before she disappears
into the shade of the jackfruit tree,
how has the destruction of all you knew created you?
where do you go when your home is in ruins?
who do you become when you are orphaned
by your own kind?
were you ever at home there anyway?
I promise
I will not bury you
in my pity.
