Mother Ship
for my mother
 
I whisper Mama
Standing near your bed
In the middle of the night
You sit up instantly
 
Pale legs swinging
Out over the sheets
Your sharp knees
Like a shining prow
 
A white ship appearing
Rescue ship approaching
The island where I shiver
By your bed, stranded
 
In a terrible dream
That you are gone
