9/22/2020 Artwork by Stuart Buck Artist statement: Ganbreeding is the process of splicing images via A.I. You begin with a base image, which can be created for you or you can upload a piece of your own art. Then you can crossbreed that image with another image to create something entirely unique. If you wish to be more technical, the A.I will pick out individual elements of each image and you can fine tune them, kind of how you can play with human DNA to ensure the best immune system. When I create an image I begin with something I have photographed or painted and make it into something completely unrecognizable and otherworldly. I then move that image to my photo-manipulation software so that I can play with the lighting, softness and imprint my own personality on the piece. I think a lot of people think of A.I art and believe the human element is not important but I actually think creating imagery this way is harder than traditional methods. You are working against the A.I in many ways. It does not know what constitutes an aesthetically pleasing image so the fine tuning is vital to ensure the end product looks good. The great benefit of A.I art is that you are utilizing a tool that is literally limitless. Although I am fairly successful with my more traditional art, I lack the pure skills that many do. Using Ganbreeding I am able to create something that, while undeniably my own, is as technically good as people with far superior artistic merit. Stuart Buck is a Pushcart/BOTN/BIFFY50 nominated poet and artist living in North Wales. His second book 'Become Something Frail' was released to critical acclaim on Selcouth Station Press in 2019. When he is not writing or reading poetry, he likes to cook, juggle and listen to music. He suffers terribly from tsundoku - the art of buying copious amounts of books that he will never read.
