The one about sex in the car with the lines I used her/she used me/but neither one cared?” He says, “Yeah” and she says, “The song is over, then right at the end, a tambourine comes in.” He says, “Okay,” and she says, “No, you think it’s done, and it is, pretty much, and then, it starts driving forward again and you feel it, but you’re not thinking, ‘What the hell? That instrument hasn’t been in this song at all.” That’s what I want. In a date, a dance, a life. I want to be thinking that it’s almost over and then have a fucking tambourine come in.” Joseph Mills has published six collections of poetry, most recently "Exit, pursued by a bear."
