6/3/2020 Poetry by Jake Nathan Skin Her skin sang songs, Told tales of journeys She had taken. Mountains she had climbed, Scrapes she had made it through And those that she hadn’t. Her struggles strewn across her Left scars in their wake. Her face painted With more than make up. Bravery, written across her cheek In blusher. Space Look upwards And ponder Your insignificance. Think, about all that exists And how you fit. Infinity awaits, Literally unmeasurable It’s almost unpleasant To conceive. We weave stories we star in, Make mountains In our minds and climb Until we scare ourselves. We dance on ledges, Legs restless We spin. So Frightened of falling We’d throw ourselves off Just to get it over with. Overwhelmed we delve Deep into our darkest, Black holes. Parted with reason But pregnant with panic We sink. The world closes in And breathing Ain’t so simple. Each breath is a battle And death rattles Around our heads. But wait. Think space. Look upwards And ponder Your insignificance. Think, about all that exists And how you fit. How can now, Be everything? When the universe Is infinite And we don’t mean a thing to it. Not even a speck of dust, But we trust our brains When they tell us We’re everything. Step back and see That we don’t matter. The chatter in our heads Is not be believed. We weave stories So much bigger than ourselves And, well, The universe Couldn’t care less. Don’t stress. This will end And you Will begin again.
